BELARUS WANTS TO PROGRESS
Independent since 1991, with 10 million inhabitants, Belarus is trying to win a place on the international stage. In the qualifying rounds for the 2017 World Championship, it won its place in France through excellent play and the best attacking moves in the playo s against Latvia. Coached by Yuri Shevtsov, the team relies mostly on members playing in the two main clubs of the domestic league: Meskov Brest and Minsk Ska. After participating in the Euro 1994 and the World Championship in 1995, the team relied on players who had come through the Russian training school in Belarus and had to wait 14 years to participate again in the Euro (2008) and 18 years for the World Championship (2013).
DID YOU KNOW?
Right up until the end, they were uncertain about whether the Belarusian star Siarhei Rutenka would participate in the 2017 World Championship. After four years with Ciudad Real and six with FC Barcelona, the left-back 35 year-old, six-time winner of the Champions League and twice, the top scorer of the competition, flew to Qatar on October 2015. It was a short experience as he then joined Ska Minsk four months later and played the qualifying playoffs for the World Championship in June. Without a club since the start of the 2016/2017 season, he was threatening to retire…
