THE NEW LEADERS?
Over the last decade, together with France, Croatia and Spain, Denmark has consistently reached the highest level in international competitions. However, although the Danes won the continental title twice, in 2008 and 2012, it has taken time to realise their great potential on the world stage. Semi- finalists in 2007 and 2009, finalists in 2011, losing to France after an epic match, and again in 2013 to Spain, Denmark finally succeeded in winning the global title at the Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio. Managed since 2014 by the Icelander Gudmundur Gudmundsson and led by the immense talents of Niklas Landin and Mikkel Hansen, the Danish team previously had two disappointing results: 5th in the World Championship in Qatar and 6th in the Euro 2016. The excellent results in Brazil have removed any doubt: the Danish team is the one to beat in France.
DID YOU KNOW?
Superstar of Danish handball, elected Most Valuable Player in the last Olympics, Mikkel Hansen still has to blot his copybook. His father, Flemming Hanssen, who also played left-back, also wore the jersey of the Danish national team (120 selections) and played in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (1984). But unlike his illustrious son, he returned without a medal, with Denmark failing to win the bronze against Romania (19-23).
