THE PHARAOHS ARE REBUILDING

By winning a 6th continental title at the African Championship last January in Cairo, the Egyptian team managed a double whammy: qualifying for both the 2017 World Championship and the Rio Olympics. Absent from the 2012 event in London, the African team was not able to move past the first group in Brazil, despite a victory against Sweden and a draw against the home team. In the 25th IHF Men’s World Championship organised in France, the Egyptians hope to find the inspiration that previously took them to the semi- finals in Bercy in 2001, when they became the first non-European nation to reach the final four of a World Championship (4th place). Since then, Egypt has not missed a World Championship but has never placed better than 14th (2009). The Pharaohs, with the vast majority of their players competing in Egypt, once again aim for a good result in France.

With 25,000 people attending the final of the 1999 World Championship between Russia and Sweden (24-25) in Cairo on the 15th of June 1999, Egypt still holds the record for the largest number of spectators at a World Championship match. This record could be beaten in France because the capacity of Stade Pierre-Mauroy, the largest of the eight venues, and where France will play its third round and quarter-final if it qualifies, is 27,500 people…
